Extracting the contents of a disc image gives you the files. It does not give you a disc, and a surprising amount of software cares about the difference. MagicDisc creates a virtual optical drive and mounts an image into it, so everything on the machine sees an inserted disc rather than a folder.
A drive that is not physically there
The mechanism is a driver presenting a drive that does not physically exist. A program checking whether its disc is present finds one, an installer expecting to read from an optical drive reads from one, and nothing has to be told that the disc is a file.
Where the files themselves are all you want, mounting is unnecessary and an archiver that opens an image like a folder extracts them without installing anything at all.
The formats are the reason to install it
Here is the point that decides whether MagicDisc is useful to you, because current systems already mount the standard image format by double-clicking it.
What they do not handle is everything else. The descriptor and binary pairs used by older burning software, the formats produced by the commercial suites that dominated optical burning, disc-copy formats carrying more than plain data, and the program’s own compressed format all open here and nowhere native.
That narrows the audience considerably and makes it precise. Somebody with a folder of images collected over years, in formats nobody produces deliberately any more, has exactly one problem and this solves it.

Several drives at once
Up to fifteen virtual drives can exist simultaneously, each holding a different image, which sounds excessive until you meet the software that needs it.
Older titles distributed across several discs, installers expecting a second disc partway through, and anything checking two volumes at once all work when the drives are simply there. The alternative is swapping images in and out and hoping the timing suits.
Operation is entirely through a tray icon. Right-click, choose a drive, choose an image, and it is mounted. There is no main window to speak of, which is the correct design for something that does one thing.

The age question
MagicDisc has not been developed for a long time, and that matters more here than it would for an ordinary program.
This installs a storage driver, which is a component sitting deep in the system and handling every access to the virtual drives it creates. An unmaintained driver of that kind is a different proposition from an unmaintained text editor, and anybody installing it on a current machine should weigh that rather than assuming an old utility is simply an old utility.
It does work, and plenty of people run it precisely because it is small and does nothing else. DAEMON Tools Lite covers the same ground with continued development, at the price of a heavier installation and rather more that you did not ask for.

MagicDisc does one thing that still has no native equivalent, which is mounting the older image formats as though they were discs. For somebody with a collection assembled before the standard format won, and software old enough to check for a disc before starting, it remains the direct answer.
Weigh the driver question before installing. This is not a small program that sits in a folder, it is a storage component that has not been updated in a long time, and a maintained alternative doing the same job exists. If the images you need are in the standard format, your system already handles them and you need none of this.
